Private Patrick Maybin Esler

Patrick Maybin Esler was born on 27 March 1899 at Dunnyvadden, Glenwherry, County Antrim, one of at least thirteen children of farmer John Esler and his wife Agnes Ann (née Esler). By the time of the 1911 Census he was living at nearby Cross, Ballyclug, with his parents and six of his siblings.
The date that Esler enlisted in the North Irish Horse, and his regimental number, are not known at present. However given his age he probably joined up in 1917 or 1918. He would have trained at the regiment's Antrim reserve camp until the end of the war before being demobilised during 1919.
At least one of Esler's brothers, William John Esler, also served in the war, in the Royal Army Veterinary Corps.
